Firefox Add-ons for Higher Education Web

Time Icon May 7th, 2008 by Kyle James

A while back I read a post over on SEOmoz about popular web browser toolbars and their value from a web developer or internet marketer perspective. It was a wonderful article that I highly recommend. This article had me thinking, this list is great but what about Higher Education professionals? I’ve been working on a list and actually had a conversation with Chris Strauber our Web Service Librarian about it. Somewhere deep down I guess I kind of feel like a web person putting together a list of Firefox add-ons that you use is sort of a requirement, right!? For the most part many of these are the standards that everyone has installed, but hopefully you will see something that that you just didn’t know about. So here is my list.

Do You Join the Conversation or Stay at a Distance? Comments Welcome!

Time Icon April 14th, 2008 by Kyle James

I’ve noticed over the months that there is a select group of people that seem to comment across the blogs in the Higher Education arena. I’m assuming that there are more individuals following the conversation as BlogHighEd is reporting over 250 RSS subscribers on their site and I’ve got slightly over 75 on a good day so somebody must be reading this along with the rest of the Higher Education blogs. What I enjoy most about reading blogs is the ability to toss my 2¢ into the discussion. I’ll admit that I have a tendency to be a little outspoken. Read the rest of this entry »

Social Survey: Del.icio.us

Time Icon February 25th, 2008 by Kyle James

Intro

Del.icio.us LogoIn a simple explanation del.icio.us is a bookmarking service that uses tags instead of folders to organize bookmarks.  Because del.icio.us is an online service it is not restricted to a physical computer.  The only thing that you need is a web browser.  Many sites across the Internet support multiple bookmarking options and del.icio.us is one of the most widespread.  Instead of trying to explain del.icio.us any further here is a really good short intro that explains del.icio.us and even gives a pretty good educational related example.  Read the rest of this entry »

Social Survey: StumbleUpon

Time Icon February 18th, 2008 by Kyle James

StumbleUpon LogoAccording to eBizMBA, StumbleUpon is the 5th largest social bookmarking site.   It is one of the most well known and many people would say the most fun to use social bookmarking sites.  What makes StumbleUpon so much fun is the StumbleUpon toolbar.  What is so amazing about this toolbar is the ability to truly surf the web.  Once installed you can set your preferences and interest and surf the web getting recommendations based on your interest.  If your interested in “Higher Education” and “Internet Marketing” then you will be more likely to get these sorts of sites shown to you.  By rating the sites that you like and don’t like using the toolbars “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” options the system learns your preferences and narrows down the sites that it sends you too.

Social Survey: Digg

Time Icon February 11th, 2008 by Kyle James

Introduction

Digg LogoWriting a review of Digg pertaining to Higher Education is much more difficult than writing one for MySpace or Facebook.  Digg is the first of the true Social Bookmarking sites that I’ve covered and is by far the largest, Top 30 Social Bookmarking Sites.  Digg has an Alexa ranking of 150 and reaches 0.64% of internet users.  According to Compete, Digg has just under 20 million monthly visitors.  Just looking at the numbers Digg has absolutely incredible potential to expose any business to millions of Internet users.
