In her guest post yesterday, Rachel Reuben argued that higher education hadn’t quite found a use for Twitter yet. I’ve long argued that higher ed should be paying less attention to what other colleges are doing and more attention to what other industries are up to. While it may be true that few colleges out there are effectively utilizing Twitter, if they looked outside of its walls they would find many example of other industries utilizing it to effectively market to and communicate with their audiences.

So after about thirty hours waiting on flights to leave Philadelphia International Airport, if you haven’t been following my twitter parade you’re probably better off just not knowing. I think I’m ready to finally put my reflections of the conference into writing while I continue to wait on the rest of my luggage to arrive. I’m sure I’m leaving out something important, but these seven items definitely were the largest takeaways that I had from the conference. As I’m writing this on the flight I realize that this post is going to be way too much to swallow in one sitting so I’m splitting it up into three parts. Read the rest of this entry »

The links are coming to you a little early this week because I’m taking tomorrow off to fly to NYC for the day. Yeah I know it’s crazy to fly up to NYC for the day, but sometimes that’s just how I roll! So why am I flying up to NYC for the day? Well a buddy of mine has four tickets to the Yankees vs Mets game. It’s a once in a life time opportunity and the last year to catch a game in the “House that Ruth built”. As some of you know I’m a die hard Braves fan so naturally I’m not a Mets fan and I believe the Yankees represent everything that is wrong with Baseball as they just go out and buy pennants. I guess I will be pulling against both teams!

Michael Fienen introduced this nice tip last week so I definitely want to give him a hat tip! You can read his full post about it, Pingilactic, you say?, for additional details. If you are into all the social media buzz and want to stay in touch with lots of friends across multiple sites then this a definite easy way to streamline part of that process. Although it won’t handle specific commands for each service. Read the rest of this entry »

So I’ve got some upcoming presentations this year about Web Analytics for Higher Education and me being the anti procrastinator that I am have started to think about exactly what could I possibly say, like I have EVER had a problem with that before. This past weekend one of those moments of enlightenment came over me and I present to you my full definition of Web Analytics 2.0. (Ok so I’ve done a little more research and Avinash Kaushik has already coined the term and has his own definition, but just like Web 2.0 there are many definitions and everyone has their own interpretation. Also Avinash if you happen to read this, I just want you to know I’m a HUGE fan! Maybe your initial WA 2.0 advice that I’m sure I’ve read before finally just sunk in, who knows?) Starting in January we tried something a little different with our First Year Student blogs. As I’ve reported before I had a hunch that prospective students care more about videos, where their parents are more likely to read the student blogs. In a creative effort and some good collaboration we were able to combine the two into a student video blog! Now keep in mind you have to find the correct student to be able to carry on something like this, but I think it’s provided a very unique perspective of the campus and our Study Abroad program. Wofford’s commencement is this weekend and Phillip Stone’s From the Archive blog has posted quite a few interesting posts about commencement over the last week. One that I found really interesting was one about Commencement at Wofford in 1858. Man things have changed over the last 150 years, but what an interesting look at how things were those many years ago. Also for those soon to be college graduates here are some tools from Mashable, 17 Online Tools For Your Graduation.

So it’s been a while since I’ve posted something in the Social Survey series, but after seeing this video on ProBlogger, Why I Love Twitter, last week I knew that I was ready to tackle my toughest task yet. Finding a Higher Education use for Twitter. Read the rest of this entry »
