I’ve been kind of neglecting the SEO part of this blog, so lets get started. The most important page on your college site is your Institutional homepage. For Wofford roughly one third of all pageviews are this page. Because of this importance it is vital that this page is not just optimized for a human visitor, but also for the search engines to bring traffic to your site. Search engines bring tens of thousands (average month is upper 40,000 hits for example) of visits to Wofford’s site a month. Read the rest of this entry »

The links are coming to you a little early this week because I’m taking tomorrow off to fly to NYC for the day. Yeah I know it’s crazy to fly up to NYC for the day, but sometimes that’s just how I roll! So why am I flying up to NYC for the day? Well a buddy of mine has four tickets to the Yankees vs Mets game. It’s a once in a life time opportunity and the last year to catch a game in the “House that Ruth built”. As some of you know I’m a die hard Braves fan so naturally I’m not a Mets fan and I believe the Yankees represent everything that is wrong with Baseball as they just go out and buy pennants. I guess I will be pulling against both teams!

As I introduced in my previous post this week, Information about Wofford’s Blogs and Alumni Bloggers, Wofford has a lot going on in our Network of blogs. Now that it’s the summer time and content is a little slow for most colleges there is the dilemma of what to feature on the main site homepage? Well maybe you don’t have a spotlight type feature like Wofford does on its homepage, but none the less do you data mine your blogs? Read the rest of this entry »

We have just completed the third year that Wofford has had blogs on its website. The first year was about five students from different backgrounds around campus and at different stages in their Wofford experience. Last year saw us tweak this formula to include a few faculty and concentrate on first year student blogs instead of upper class students. This year saw that formula changed a little bit more and added to as the year has gone. What Wofford currently has is a smorgasbord of blogs from all aspects of campus and beyond.

Since the week started out with such a powerful debate about Higher Education bloggers and their need to market themselves… hum… I better just leave it at that. If you missed out and want to read the whole conversation head on over to Andrew’s post Higher Ed Bloggers: Show Your Power! and you can follow the trackback links in the comments from there. This week I’m breaking my rule and posting a few more than seven lucky links. I can’t decide which to purge out at this point so I’m just going to give you “teeeeen”. A perfect TEN! Boy did Andrew not have any idea what he was invoking the other day when he posted about the Ad Age 150. In what turned out to be an interesting Monday and I read about multiple bloggers who rejected this idea to spend two minutes to submit their blog to a Marketing Ranking service. What’s so ironic is the debate has taken exponentially longer than the amount of time it takes to submit, you have to love a good debate! If you don’t want to do it no problem that’s your decision, but something has been eating at me and as I laid down in bed last night one of those few barely twitching electrons is my head hit a spark that can only be described as a nuclear reaction. Anyone who’s considering starting a blog be warned because those nights where you used to sleep peacefully will now be consumed with an unending river of blog post ideas and occasionally the dam will burst and a tidal wave will crash down impeding sleep until you have the flick of a thought on paper. Here goes.

Have you heard about this revolutionary new car idea? BMW has a new concept car, called the Gina, with an exterior made of flexible cloth. Doors can be opened seamlessly along with the lights and it’s a car that weighs significantly less. This crazy idea isn’t even brand new as it was originally built six years ago It is finally seeing the light of day as the concept car, which actually drives, is being moved to the BMW Museum in Munich. I would guess watching the video one would come to one of two completely different mindsets; that is really weird and it can’t be safe or wow really cool. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s been one of those wild weeks. I’m not really sure why or how, just seems like drama has made it to new levels on so many fronts. Summer school has been plugging away nicely and to think I only have three classes and in a week and a half will be finished with another class. This weekend has way to much craziness going on, besides being Friday the 13th, tomorrow is my Mom’s birthday. Last year for her 60th birthday she wanted to go to a Cubs game which they won, but kind of ironic a year later that those same Cubbies just completed a sweep of our beloved Bravos.

Michael Fienen introduced this nice tip last week so I definitely want to give him a hat tip! You can read his full post about it, Pingilactic, you say?, for additional details. If you are into all the social media buzz and want to stay in touch with lots of friends across multiple sites then this a definite easy way to streamline part of that process. Although it won’t handle specific commands for each service. Read the rest of this entry »

So I’ve got some upcoming presentations this year about Web Analytics for Higher Education and me being the anti procrastinator that I am have started to think about exactly what could I possibly say, like I have EVER had a problem with that before. This past weekend one of those moments of enlightenment came over me and I present to you my full definition of Web Analytics 2.0. (Ok so I’ve done a little more research and Avinash Kaushik has already coined the term and has his own definition, but just like Web 2.0 there are many definitions and everyone has their own interpretation. Also Avinash if you happen to read this, I just want you to know I’m a HUGE fan! Maybe your initial WA 2.0 advice that I’m sure I’ve read before finally just sunk in, who knows?)
