    Overall, colleges definitely have the upper hand here. Unlike the creator of the fake group, the admissions office has e-mail addresses for nearly every applicant. With that alone they can drive people toward an official group.

    Beyond that (to extend your idea of a “teachable moment”) the admissions office can peer into who joined the unofficial group and send a “coincidental” message to those folks mentioning the fake group being fake and pointing people toward the official group.

    Those steps are relatively simple. But nurturing an active, engaging “class of” group on Facebook definitely takes time, effort and creativity.

    I hate seeing fake groups pop up all over the place. The constant invites to join this and join that have just become overwhelming.
